Jazz Up Your Sundays
Canadian songstress Tammy Weis is the second artist to appear in our Sunday afternoon jazz season that boasts a roll call of some the finest modern jazz musicians - the Dave Stapleton Quintet, Tom Cawley's Curios and fab saxophonist, Mark Lockheart. Between them they've racked up a litany of rave reviews and are sure to deliver the hottest and coolest of jazz in this must see season.
Second in the season on Sunday February 28th is the excellent singer songwriter Tammy Weis who mixes jazz standards and her own beautifully crafted original songs in a repertoire that showcases a voice of depth, quality and individuality. "The real deal and well worth checking out," says Time Out magazine. (Tickets £10 to £12).
Hailed as "The most formidable piano trio the UK," by Mojo magazine, Tom Cawley's Curios won Best Band in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards and take to The Kenton stage on Sunday April 25th. Their distinctive sound is down to the band's chemistry - an unrivalled interplay between the musicians; multi award winning pianist Cawley, bass player Sam Burgess and drummer Joshua Blackmore. (Tickets £10 to £12).
Completing the quartet of jazz gigs on Sunday May 23rd is saxophonist and composer Mark Lockheart who earned his awesome reputation playing with the likes of Loose Tubes, Polar Bear and Perfect Houseplants. But it is his outstanding performance on his latest album, In Deep, that has drawn comparisons to sax greats Michael Brecker and Joe Henderson. His powerful compositions do justice to the excellence of his group's fine musicians - Dave Smith on drums, Jasper Holby on bass, Dave Priseman on trumpet and Liam Noble on piano - "One of the most glorious bits of writing and playing you'll hear this year," says Jazzwise. (Tickets £14 to £16).
